social separation

that measure of separation
when everything becomes

my soul shrivels
into a distant speck.

your smile
fades into a memory.

this looming threat
converges upon us
and pushes us aside,
separates us until
we grow weary.

borders emerge where there were none
fences and walls make strangers of friends
rooms become fortresses
and hearts remain guarded.

in this stagnant pond of life
where everything is standstill
I find myself displaced,
separated within like an apostrophe –
hair there
mouth here
broken and distorted
fragmented over and over again
on its calm surface.
