No Absolutes

love, let us stretch this word
and wrap it
around our tongues.
let us stab our hearts
with its jagged edges,
stroke our wounds and lift
our scabs with its prongs.

let us sift it into our souls
and watch it spread. slowly.
let us pronounce it over and
over again until it
melts and sizzles…
as we lie
as we lie broken
as we lie broken open.
as we pry
as we pry open.
as we try.

there are no absolutes.
just half-truths and half-lies.
shadows and light.
and a world of pain that awaits us
in the name of
